New York Times article on the recent death of Irving Penn, a powerful, influential photographer of the 20th Century. The article states, “His career at Vogue spanned a number of radical transformations in fashion and its depiction, but his style remained remarkably constant. Imbued with calm and decorum, his photographs often seemed intent on defying fashion.”

You can check out some of his work on Photography-Now, a directory of fine art photographers.

Houston Center for Photography has a current exhibition on Texas Landscape….Some interesting variety!

The William Kentridge exhibition at the Ft. Worth Modern is a must see.  His combination of drawing and video are truly remarkable.  The show comes down in just a few days, so try to swing by Ft. Worth to see it!  You can check out more of the pictures on the Modern’s website.

Also, there are some influential videos about Dan Winter’s photographic work on the Strobist blog.  He speaks about his life as a newspaper photographer, and the power of the still image.  We should as photographers be reminded of the power of solid imagery.  We as visual artists can reach past stylistic approaches and begin to see photographically within the camera.  He has some important things to say about what is important, and what is just fluff.

20Sep09

Check out Constantine Manos’ photo essay on American Color on Magnum In Motion.   This would be a good chance to think of how he uses depth of field, without wavering from his concept…

Some thoughts about typologies…

The Exposure Project is a great resource of viewing work…just use the key work Typologies

The picture above is from The Brooklyn Typology Project by Neil Freeman, featured on the Urban Omnibus, a project of the Architectural League in New York, it is definitely worth looking over.

Amy Elkins and Cara Phillips have an interesting blog that is full of great resources about typologies within the fine art world.  Check it out!

Never to forget about classic Typologies such as Bernd and Hilla Becher featured at the MoMA.

Over at aphotoeditor.com, Rob Haggart has an interesting post about how U2 came to use Hiroshi Sugimoto’s image for their new album.

Joel Meyerowitz

Over the at the Candid Frame, there is a good interview with Joel Meyerowitz.

Meyerowitz
is not one to mince words. His opnions are as strong as his images.

Joel Meyerowitz

Meyerowitz is also eleoquent when it comes to discussing photography.

Portraits and typologies have been common themes in past final projects.

Lise Sarfati/Magnum Photos from Fashion Magazine Austin, Texas

Lise Sarfati, a photographer with Magnum Photos recently completed an issue of Magnum Fashion Magazine, by photographing in Austin. She had photographed there before for her book La Vie Nouvelle. The portraits are all done with natural light and in a rather straightforward way. The pictures go beyond the typical portrait or fashion picture.

Here is an article where Opie and Schorr’s work is discussed.

In terms of typologies, the web magazine Fraction has devoted it’s new issue to the topic.

Alec Soth, who is also a member of Magnum Photos, recently completed a project where he photographed 33 movie theaters.

In addition to all of this work, the website pause to begin has interviews with several photographers that are woth listening to. The best part of the interviews is hearing how they frame their work within the medium. Their blog has links to interviews. This one with Shawn Records is a good place to start.

The UNT photography organization Parallax has a photo show up at the Art Six coffee house until Nov. 23. Go see some pictures when you get your coffee fix.
