Tribute to Irving Penn…

New York Times article on the recent death of Irving Penn, a powerful, influential photographer of the 20th Century. The article states, “His career at Vogue spanned a number of radical transformations in fashion and its depiction, but his style remained remarkably constant. Imbued with calm and decorum, his photographs often seemed intent on defying fashion.”
You can check out some of his work on Photography-Now, a directory of fine art photographers.

Kentridge and Dan Winters…
The William Kentridge exhibition at the Ft. Worth Modern is a must see. His combination of drawing and video are truly remarkable. The show comes down in just a few days, so try to swing by Ft. Worth to see it! You can check out more of the pictures on the Modern’s website.

Also, there are some influential videos about Dan Winter’s photographic work on the Strobist blog. He speaks about his life as a newspaper photographer, and the power of the still image. We should as photographers be reminded of the power of solid imagery. We as visual artists can reach past stylistic approaches and begin to see photographically within the camera. He has some important things to say about what is important, and what is just fluff.

portraits and typologies
Portraits and typologies have been common themes in past final projects.
Lise Sarfati/Magnum Photos from Fashion Magazine Austin, Texas
Lise Sarfati, a photographer with Magnum Photos recently completed an issue of Magnum Fashion Magazine, by photographing in Austin. She had photographed there before for her book La Vie Nouvelle. The portraits are all done with natural light and in a rather straightforward way. The pictures go beyond the typical portrait or fashion picture.
